Getting an LEI number starts with checking whether the legal entity already has one. This prevents duplicate applications and helps identify whether you need a new registration or an existing LEI needs attention.
Whether your entity needs an LEI number in India depends on its activities, transactions and the applicable requirements. If an LEI is required and no existing record is found, you can continue with the online application.
Each legal entity should have only one LEI. Before requesting a new code, search for the entity using its registered legal name or existing LEI number.
The search result determines what you should do next.
| Search result | What to do next |
|---|---|
| No matching LEI record | Continue with a new LEI application |
| Registration status: ISSUED | Do not apply again. Keep the existing number or transfer the LEI if you want to change the managing LEI issuer |
| Registration status: LAPSED | Renew the existing LEI rather than applying for another number |
Finding a record does not necessarily mean its data is current. Check the legal entity name, registration status and next renewal date before proceeding.
Having accurate entity information ready can make the application and validation process more straightforward.
Entity Information
You will generally need:
Registered legal name:
Legal form:
Registered address:
Jurisdiction of formation:
Registration authority:
CIN or another applicable registration number
The information should match the details recorded in authoritative sources.
Parent Entity Information
The application may require information about the entity’s direct and ultimate accounting consolidating parents. Where no parent information can be reported, the appropriate reporting exception must be selected.
These are accounting consolidation relationships, not a general declaration of beneficial ownership.
Authorisation and Supporting Evidence
The person submitting the application must be authorised to act for the entity. Supporting documents may be requested when the entity information or the applicant’s authority cannot be verified through available authoritative records.
The required evidence can vary depending on the entity type and the information available for verification.
The LEI24 application process begins with an entity search and continues through the following steps.
If any information cannot be verified, you may be asked to provide clarification or supporting evidence. Once the application is successfully validated and the LEI is issued, the record appears in the Global LEI Index.
Many straightforward applications for Indian entities are processed within one to two hours after the application is completed, paid and successfully verified.
Applications requiring supporting documents, authorisation evidence or additional parent-relationship checks may take longer.
Common causes of additional checks include:
Providing complete and consistent information from the start can reduce the need for follow-up requests.
The entity receives a unique 20-character LEI, and its reference data becomes publicly searchable in the Global LEI Index. The registration status is shown as ISSUED once the application has been completed successfully.
You can also download an LEI certificate when a bank, broker or another organisation requests the LEI information in a shareable document. The certificate presents the record details but does not replace the LEI itself.
The data connected to an LEI must be revalidated at least annually. If the annual renewal is missed, the registration status changes to LAPSED, but the same LEI number remains assigned to the entity.
Start your application with LEI24 and submit the entity information required for validation. Once the application is successfully verified, Nasdaq CSD SE issues the LEI.
You can obtain an LEI through a GLEIF-accredited Local Operating Unit or a Registration Agent working with one. LEI24 facilitates applications through Nasdaq CSD SE, a GLEIF-accredited LOU.
Search for the entity, confirm that it does not already have an LEI, complete the required entity and parent information, select a plan and submit the application for validation.
You generally need the entity’s registered name, legal form, address, registration details and direct and ultimate accounting consolidating parent information. Supporting evidence may be requested when the information cannot be verified.
Many straightforward applications are processed within one to two hours after completion, payment and successful verification. Applications requiring documents or additional checks may take longer.
A one-year LEI registration costs ₹3,949. Discounted three- and five-year plans are also available. The selected price and any applicable charges are shown before payment.
Do not apply for another number. If the registration status is ISSUED, use the existing LEI. If it is LAPSED, renew the same record instead.
Nasdaq CSD SE issues the LEI as the GLEIF-accredited Local Operating Unit. LEI24 facilitates the application as a Registration Agent.
The LEI remains assigned to the entity, but its associated data must be revalidated at least annually. If renewal is missed, the registration status changes to LAPSED.
