How the LEI Renewal Process Works

Renewing an LEI confirms that the information connected to the entity remains accurate. If anything has changed since the last validation, you can submit the new details during the same process.

1

Find Your LEI Record

Enter the entity’s registered legal name or existing 20-character LEI number to retrieve its current public record.

2

Confirm or Update the Details

Review the entity’s legal name, addresses, registration information and parent relationships. Correct any information that has changed since the LEI was issued or last renewed.

3

Select a Plan and Submit

Choose a one-, three- or five-year renewal plan and submit the application for validation. Supporting documents may be requested when information cannot be confirmed through available records.

After the renewal is approved, the entity’s next renewal date and registration status are updated in the Global LEI Index.

What Is LEI Renewal?

LEI renewal is the annual revalidation of the legal entity information connected to an existing LEI number. It confirms that the public record remains accurate and extends the next renewal date for another year.

The process does not issue a new identifier. The same LEI remains assigned to the entity throughout its existence, including after renewal, an information update or a transfer between service providers.

If the renewal deadline passes, the record’s registration status changes to LAPSED. The LEI remains assigned to the entity, but its reference data is no longer shown as currently revalidated.

LEI Renewal, Update and Transfer Explained

Renewal, update and transfer are related services, but each serves a different purpose.

Service What It Does When It Is Needed
LEI Renewal Revalidates the entity information and extends the next renewal date Every year
LEI Update Changes information connected to the existing LEI record When entity details change
LEI Transfer Moves management of the LEI to another service provider When changing providers

None of these processes changes the entity’s LEI number.

If another provider currently manages the LEI, it may need to be transferred to LEI24 before we can complete the renewal. The transfer itself does not renew the record, but both processes can be requested together when applicable.

When Should You Renew or Update an LEI?

Renewal follows the annual revalidation cycle. An update is required when the information connected to the entity changes, even if its next renewal date has not yet arrived.

Renew Before the Next Renewal Date

Each LEI record includes a next renewal date. Completing the renewal before that date prevents the registration status from changing to LAPSED.

You can search the entity’s LEI record to check its current status, registered details and next renewal date.

Update the LEI When Entity Information Changes

The LEI record may need updating after a change to the entity’s:

  • Registered legal name
  • Registered or headquarters address
  • Legal form
  • Indian registration information
  • Direct accounting consolidating parent
  • Ultimate accounting consolidating parent
  • Merger, acquisition or restructuring information

An update changes the reference data connected to the identifier, not the LEI number itself. The new information must be validated before it appears in the Global LEI Index.

How to Update an LEI Certificate

An LEI certificate presents information from the entity’s public LEI record. The PDF itself is not edited directly.

First, submit the changed entity information for validation. Once the public record has been updated, you can download a new LEI certificate showing the current details.

Renewal may also change the status and next renewal date shown on a newly generated certificate. The entity’s 20-character LEI number remains unchanged.

What Happens If Your LEI Has Lapsed?

An LEI becomes lapsed when its annual renewal is not completed by the next renewal date. The code remains assigned to the same entity and continues to appear in the Global LEI Index, but the record is no longer shown as currently revalidated.

A lapsed status may result in additional checks or delays where a bank, regulator or counterparty requires current LEI information. Whether it affects a particular transaction depends on the applicable requirement and the institution involved.

A lapsed LEI should be renewed rather than replaced. The entity cannot obtain a second LEI to avoid renewing the existing record.

Restore a Lapsed LEI

To restore the record:

  1. Find the existing LEI using the entity name or code.
  2. Review and update the entity information.
  3. Submit the renewal for validation.
  4. Provide supporting documents if requested.

Once approved, the registration status returns to ISSUED and a new next renewal date is recorded.

Keep Your LEI Record Current

Renew your LEI before its next renewal date, restore a lapsed status or submit changed entity information for validation.

Support is available when the LEI is managed by another provider, the entity has a complex ownership structure or additional documents are needed to verify an update. If you need help with a complex LEI update or want to clarify the renewal requirements, please contact our team.
